Cricketfield Road was shut as officers dealt with the problem.
Inspector Leigh Ballard, whose officers helped remove the van, told Hillingdon is Here: “Whilst patrolling the police came across this incident.
“The driver was stunned that he had driven under the bridge not realising that his vehicle was too tall to pass under it and it took several hours to get the vehicle out as even with letting the tyres down it could not be removed easily.
“The van was a write off with no structural damage sustained to the bridge.”
The accident happened last Wednesday.
He said: “There have been several vehicles which have been wedged under this bridge in the past, which you can clearly tell by the marks on the roof.
“Drivers need to be aware of their vehicle dimensions and roadworthiness before driving it and they also need to be observant of all road signs, including the one clearly situated above the bridge in this instance.”
